The historic city of McGregor, Iowa is a small working river-front city of 900 nestled in the woods. McGregor is located one mile from Marquette, Iowa (population approx 400), home of the Lady Luck Casino, and three miles from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin (population approx 6000). The three cities make up what is sometimes referred to as the "greater Prairie du Chien metropolitan area." The area offers endless possibilities including antique and speciality shops, great restaurants, boating, hiking, camping and all sorts of family entertainment.

The Holiday Shores is also located right next door to the McGregor City Marina and public boat launch, making your boat access to the Mississippi exceptionally convenient.

The refuge is home to many plant and fish species and large populations of eagles, swans and herons, making it the best location in all of the Midwest for viewing wildlife.
